Face-to-face with a lion

I have no idea what I would do if I came across a mountain lion. It would be kind of cool, but deathly scary. The thing I don't understand is why did they have to kill the lion. Is that really necessary? Couldn't they have brought the lion back to its natural habitat or at least the zoo?
